Violinist Hyojin Ellen Kim, a promising young artist, is forging an impressive career and demonstrating her potential on the global stage. She has performed on prestigious stages around the world, including Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Herkulessaal, Smetana Hall, Seoul Arts Center, Lotte Arts Center, and many others.
Kim's international acclaim began early; at the age of 13, she performed with the Moravian Philharmonic at Smetana Hall in Prague. In 2018, she garnered significant attention with the Münchner Kammerphilharmonie dacapo at a sold-out Herkulessaal in Munich. She made her New York debut with the Mid-Atlantic Philharmonic Orchestra at Merkin Hall, a performance well-received by audiences. Most recently, she was invited by Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien to perform with the Szolnok Symphony Orchestra at Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, becoming the first Korean violinist to perform Mozart’s violin concerto at this historic venue. For the 2024-25 season, Kim will be making her debut at the Musikverein Golden Hall and Bartók Hall with the Savaria Symphony Orchestra, at the Auditorio Internacional de Música de Torrevieja with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Torrevieja, and at the Philharmonic Hall in Baku with the Azerbaijan Philharmonic Orchestra.
Her musical journey began in Korea, where she studied with Bonjoo Koo at Yewon School and Seoul Arts High School, and with Jihee Lim at Seoul National University. She continued her studies at the Juilliard School under the mentorship of Hyo Kang, earning both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in 2023 through the Accelerated BM/MM program. She is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the Graduate Center, City University of New York, where she studies with Daniel Phillips.
Kim's accolades include top prizes in several Korean competitions, such as the Eumak-Chunchu Competition, Sunjung Competition, Korea’s Herald Competition, Yewon Competition, and the Seoul Chamber Music Competition. She was also honored with the Lee Dae Woong Scholarship, which included a career grant for furthering her studies.
As an enthusiastic chamber musician, she has performed in distinguished chamber concerts with renowned ensembles, including Sejong Soloists and the New Juilliard Ensemble, and has participated in Juilliard faculty recitals featuring contemporary music premieres. Her chamber music performances have been held at Paul Hall and Morse Hall at Juilliard, as well as at Lincoln Center’s Bruno Walter Auditorium and Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall. Her chamber music coaches have included Emanuel Ax, Julian Martin, Samuel Rhodes, Astrid Schween, and Areta Zhulla.
